Assertiveness

Unfortunately, very often assertiveness is confused and mixed up with aggression. The latter one means some kind of wilfulness and decisiveness, as well as angry and violent feelings and behaviour against others which may physically and mentally hurt other competitors.

When analysing the notion of assertiveness the following questions are raised: what is the reason for learning and using this skill. Husman and Silva (1984) regard aggressiveness as bold and energetic pursuit of a goal and being assertive is the intent to exhibit strength.

Nagykáldi’s research (2001) proved the presence of assertiveness in different sports. He thinks that assertiveness is the ability to combat and fight which is accompanied with competences such as initiation, offensiveness and validation of will. These types of behaviour can be observed and present in our every day life. There are winners and losers. From this respects sports can develop athletes’ both mental and physical conditions.
