Dance Education

Domokos Mihály

Dance is the bearer of cultural values, the means of developing human relationships, and the cultural scene of social life.

Dancing is good, beautiful, and a must!

Dancing is a fact of life. There is no man on earth who has not danced at one time, even if he has no affinity for it. But most people have dancing skills, and can take advantage of it if they are given the chance. And opportunities are always there.

Who has not been to a senior prom, a freshman prom, and a school / university / work party?

Dance is with us all our lives. Typically, dance expresses emotions through the bodily movements to music. Dance is also considered to be non-verbal means of communication between people. Dance is designed to increase people's participation, there are social dances and dances performed for the audience. Dance can be solemn, competitive or erotic. Dance movements may have no direct content, but they can also have their own sign language or symbolic meaning as is the case in many Asian dances. Dance can express thoughts, feelings, or could tell a story as well.

The development of ballroom dancing. Ever since the ancient times, when people came together to celebrate, they could not stay without music and dance. Dances were not only fun, but also part of the ceremonies of a community. In addition to a cult or religious significance they were important in the life of a community, keeping it together. Music (songs, chants, later instrumental music) was passed down from father to son as a tradition within a group of people. Each group of people has its own folk music and dance. http://www.borokas.hu/szaki/pdf/tancelet.pdf

While there is no need to learn, for instance, disco dancing, as we move the way we want (that is, the way we imagine to what extent our dance can affect our partner), the other ballroom dances: waltz, polka, foxtrot, etc. need to be learnt.

The emergence of school-based dance teaching was facilitated by the efforts of the educational curriculum reform in the 1990's. In the physical education curriculum, adapted to the school system, the form content (movement - music - harmony) is displayed in the physical education teaching process.

Overall, while the curriculum framework defines content development and the assigned number of hours for the divisions of particular schools, only 90% of content is mandatory while the remaining 10% offers free options during planning.

The freedom of planning offered the opportunity to teach subjects which assist the development of movement literacy, such as

Drama and dance,

Dance and movement

Teaching of dance may also take place during physical education classes, guided by suitably qualified teachers.

For a dancer, dance education within the framework of physical education teaching ensures the application and the development of various forms of movement (aerobics, hip-hop etc.).
