IV.3. Maintenance

The parts of roller skates that can be maintained at home are the axles, spacers, bearings and wheels. If they are gravely worn out, axles and spacers can also be replaced at home after purchasing the parts of proper quality.

By maintaining the wheels, their duration of use can be lengthened. If their internal rim is worn out or after excessive use, the wheels have to be replaced. If we replace the wheels only in one of the pairs, the remaining ones have to be turned so that the worn side faces the outer side. If we exchange the wheels between the two pairs, it is enough to change them and it is needless to turn them. It is also important to exchange them in a way that the front and rear wheels go to the middle, and the middle ones become the front and rear wheels. This is because the outer wheels wear out more than the middle ones. In case of excessive abrasion, it may be necessary to replace the whole set of wheels (Béres, 2004).

The cleaning and lubrication of the bearings can also lengthen the lifespan of these parts. One wheel contains two removable bearings. First, you need to carefully wipe the dust off the seal or shield of the bearing using a dry cloth. The shield or seal is fixed to the bearing with a small steel spring. You can take it off with the help of a needle. You need to pay attention to not damaging or bending the shield or seal, as the bearing can also become useless. Then, you need to wash the dirt and the used grease from between the balls with a special liquid. Then, you need to grease the clean balls with a silicon based lubricant, and put the shield or seal and the spring back in its place. In the case of excessive abrasion, it may be necessary to replace the bearing (Béres, 2004).

Parts that need to be fixed or replaced in a repair shop are buckles, ankle support, bolts and the rail (if replaceable). If the boot part is damaged and can be sewed, then a shoemaker can repair it, but if the damage is more serious, it is advised to buy a new pair of skates.
