III.1.6. Music in aerobics classes

Music is one of the most important things in an aerobics class, as it is key to executing the exercises. It sets the pace of the execution and has a general impact on the mood of the class. A well-chosen music is half of the success, being a motivating, moving and inspiring addition to the workout. More reserved participants can also ease up with music.

It is best to edit aerobics music from tracks of 2/4 or 4/4 time signature. The pace of the music is given in BPM (beats per minute). It is important to adjust the pace of the music to the exercises and the age and experience of the participants. If the music is too fast, they will not be able to execute the exercises, the quality of movements deteriorates, the risk of accidents increases and, because of not being able to keep up with the exercise, they miss the sense of achievement. If the music is too slow, however, the class is less efficient, and participants will lack the proper level of motivation. The volume should be chosen so that instructions can be heard, but a moderately loud music is needed for motivation.
