I.2. KORFBALL

In Hungary, outdoor and beach versions of korfball are getting more and more popular, probably because they can be played anywhere with few equipment. It is unique among team sports, as korfball allows both male and female players to participate equally in the teams. Beaches, grassy areas and streetball courts are all suitable for this game.

The objective of the mixed-gender teams in this game is to shoot the ball into the basket/korf standing at a height of 3.5 m from the ground. The sport’s main characteristics encompass all-round skills, team cooperation, controlled physical contact and gender equality.

In 1902, on an educational course in Sweden, Nico Broeknuisen, a teacher from Amsterdam was introduced to the game “ringboll”. Back home applying some changes he created a game where male and female players, young and elderly ones can all play together. In the beginning, korfball was played exclusively outdoors, nowadays the indoor version is more popular.
