III.1.4. Sport aerobics

Sport aerobics is based on fitness aerobics classes, and consists of exercises combined with high-intensity movements. A routine is performed to a music chosen by the contestant (or his/her trainer). The choreography consists of specific movement patterns and high-intensity elements. Performances in sport aerobics are assessed based on difficulty, execution, creativity and artistic quality. The aims of the performers are the improvement of performance and physical fitness and successful participation at contests.

The first aerobics competition was organized in 1984, in New Orleans. The federations of sports aerobic (IAF – International Aerobics Federation, FISAF – Federation of International Sports, Aerobics and Fitness) have organised the World Cup since 1989, the World Championship since 1990 and the European Championship since 1994. FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) published its rules first in 1994 and in that year it admitted sports aerobics as its discipline. UEG (European Union of Gymnastics) organized its first European Championship in 1999. Hungarian Aerobics Federation (MAESZ) was founded on December 13, 1991. MAESZ held its first National Championship in Aerobics on March 8, 1992. Since the beginning, sports aerobics has seen big changes. Nearly every country has its own competition system and founded a national federation.

Current competition regulations in Hungary, published by MAESZ:
