The description of wall and rock climbing from the point of view of motor skills

Motor skills can be effectively improved by wall and rock climbing. in these sports the level of motor skills is quite decisive. It determines how effectively we can carry out certain technical elements of climbing. Some other skills are also involved, like strength capacity, sense of rhythm, sense of movement, space perception or balance. Some auxiliary exercises should also be mentioned, for example, those that improve flexibility and also certain mental trainings. Climbing is a good workout for the majority of our muscles and enhances our cardiovascular system. The most important thing is to be conscious of our own capabilities in order not to overload ourselves.

Besides improving motor skills you should also concentrate on the experiences gained so far in practice and the basic movement skills. The psychological and mental state can be decisive in the middle of action. The adequate organization of our equipment during climbing can have a great deal of influence on our mental and physical capacity and the measure of our fatigue.

You should always start climbing bigger walls or rocks well prepared and in excellent physical shape. Never neglect mental preparation. Always aim at a safe climb.

The optimal choice of known and used technical elements is a very important factor of performance. During climbing you should always let your legs carry the most of your body weight – and also make your students pay attention to this. Besides the techniques, managing your body weight properly is a cardinal point of climbing. The arms and hands help the forward (upward) movement by balancing, pulling and fixing. The center of your body weight should be above the holds to avoid straining your arms sideways. If you get tired, look for a spot where you can easily, comfortably, and safely stop or even sit down.

Balance skills are vital for climbing but often not enough. When you reach complicated formations, you have to excessively use your hands and arms to avoid swinging outward. You should climb dynamically, consciously and at a good rhythm.

Memorizing and observing your climbing route can be decisive. It helps you concentrate if you visualize your route prior to climbing and plan your moves. You can decide on techniques, steps or places to rest.
