Static models

Building static models can be a hobby that you do alone or in a club or association. There are different manufacturers specialized on static models, too. The aim is to build the exact miniature of a full-scale or imaginary object. This can be a vehicle, a building or a figure. The emphasis is on the exact same appearance. The most important characteristic of a static model is the scale number. If this number is 1:72 then that means that every part of the model is 1/72 the size of the original.

  • 1:6 –mainly busts
  • 1:10 – best scale for full figures and busts
  • 1:16 – also for figures
  • 1:24 – mainly for cars and their figures
  • 1:32 – for vehicle figures without full bodies
  • 1:48 – airplane and military vehicle figures
  • 1:72 – the most wide-spread scale number
  • 1:87 – for train models
  • 1:144 – for civil and military aircraft models
  • 1:350 – common for navy topics
  • 1:720 – larger navy vessels and submarines

If you start building a static model, you will need special equipment.

Most common equipment:

  • for cutting
  • for polishing
  • for painting

The Lord of the Rings figures you can see here belong to the Warhammer 40000 group, which is the sci-fi universe created by the British Games Workshop. A row of board and computer games are built on this fantasy world. The strategic game of Warhammer 40000 was created in 1987 and currently is at its sixth edition. These are miniature, paintable and collectable figures. A figure in general is 2-3 cm tall.
