Sumo

Number of participants: the whole class, in pairs

Necessary equipment: a circle (5m diameter) drawn on the floor tatami or carpets

Skills: reaction speed, orientation in space, strength, body combat, finding a good hold, balance

Pairs should be set up of the same gender and weight group. They stand in the middle of the circle facing each other.

Aim: on a mark they try to get the other out of the circle by applying the previously learned techniques. 

It is allowed to push, pull, to apply small throws or controlled small thrusts. The opponents may be brought to the ground within the circle.

The major aim is to get the partner out of the balanced position.

The participant who can make the other step out of the circle or touch the ground with any other body part than his/her feet is the winner.

Rules:

  1. It is forbidden to hit with a fist, to kick or trip the opponent.
  2. It is not allowed to fight passively or try to escape.

Variations:

  1. This game can be played as a form of wrestling, too, in which throws are not allowed but if a participant can lift up his/her opponent for more than 3 seconds that scores a point (not only getting the opponent out of the circle.
