A brief history of rowing in Hungary

  • at the beginning of the 20th century people become more and more interested in sports and recreation
  • Count István Széchenyi introduces rowing in Hungary after his visit to England (1840s)
  • in the 1840s the first paddling association is formed by and for noblemen
  • March 19th, 1843: the first Hungarian rowing race
  • 1861: formation of the first Rowing Sports Association at Budapest
  • some years later similar rowing associations were formed in other major Hungarian cities, too. For example, Szeged, 1870
  • 1886: the first Permanent Regatta Committee formed to provide a homogenous code of rules for rowing races
  • 1893: Hungarian Federation of Rowing Associations formed, first chairman: Albert Bedő
  • 1893: first Hungarian championship
