Last man standing: a simple elimination game in which players play against each other as individuals not a team. Everyone can shoot at everyone and the last player on the field is the winner.

Capture the Flag: Each of the two teams has a flag in their base which is located on opposite sides of the game zone. The aim of the game is to capture the enemy’s flag from their base and deliver it back to your base before they capture your flag.

Bomb the Base: A neutral bomb or similar object is placed in the centre of the game zone, usually in a building. The objective is to take the bomb or object from the centre of the game zone and into the enemy’s base.

Attack and Defend: One team occupy a castle/fort and their mission is to defend it. The other team has to attack the enemy’s position and raise the flag before the game finishes. The attacking team is usually allowed to re-spawn (walk back to the starting point then having another go) for the first few minutes or for the duration of the game.

Hostile Takeover: Upwards of four neutral targets, usually buildings or vehicles, populate the game zone. The objective for both teams is to seize control of the targets as points are scored for each target secured and held at the end of the game.

Team Deathmatch: The original way to play paintball. Team Deathmatch is a simple team based total annihilation game where each team has to take out every member of the opposing team in order to win.

Protect the President: One member from the defending team is nominated to be the president who has to be protected and possibly escorted to safety by the rest of the team. The objective of the attacking team is to take down the president before the game is over.

Woodsball (also known as woods paintball, hillball or bushball) is a format of paintball gaming, in which players compete in a natural outdoors area (contrasting with inflatable bunker-based speedball format) using paintball guns to mark opponents.

It is recognized as the first format of paintball ever played, and is often used in conjunction with scenario paintball, allowing players to enact parts in a story or historical battle. This is due to its effectiveness in allowing players to simulate military situations using realistic weaponry and equipment; all of which are customizable - allowing each player to fulfill a tactical role. The types of games playable are infinite, and include mostly capture the flag or elimination.

Speedball is one of the three distinct game variants in the sport of paintball, woodsball and scenario paintball.

It is a general term for a game in which the playing field is composed of inflatable bunkers, of the same location and number on each side of the field, that provide an equal playing field for each team competing. It was created in this way to give a better format for competitive paintball, both in playing and viewing the games.
