Female athletic triad

Female athletic triad was first introduced into literature in the 90-es (Sudgot-Borgen, 1993). It is a symptom in which eating disorders, amenorrhea and osteoporosis are present (Túry and Pászthy, 2008). This condition is seen in females emphasizing leanness and low body weight. The symptoms of their disorders often contain irregular menses and amenorrhea (Goodman and et al, 2005, Resch and Szendrei, 2004). The symptoms of athletic triad are characterized by inadequate caloric intake, avoiding eating certain foods (e.g. meat), binge eating and self- induced vomiting. Amenorrhea is the consequence of all these symptoms and the reason for this is mainly physical and mental stress. Osteoporosis is due to the inadequate bone density (Túry and Pászthy, 2008). Nowadays the meaning of eating disorder has been revised and instead the following explanation is used: “eating disorder due to little energy quantity”. Low energy level refers to low body fat (Nattiv and et al, 2007). Torsrveit abd Subdgot-Borgen (2005a, 2005b, 2005c) think that athletic triad occurs more often in case of females doing sports focusing on thinness.
