Method of teaching throwing

Throwing is a natural movement thus it is a very popular element of physical activities and movements. Different objects and devices (beanbag, ball and stick) can be thrown far to our partners (standing, moving, lying etc.).

We can throw with two hands, one hand, from bottom, from above, on the spot (while standing, sitting, kneeling or lying). Throwing can be tossing, flinging, hurling and casting. Throwing techniques develop the whole body in a complex way, for example, muscles of upper and lower limbs, velocity and they also coordinate movements and motions.

Throwing is the prerequisite of fine movements/ skills.

Evidently students should be taught to catch things.

  • Throwing can be done individually. In this case each student needs to have a ball or any other device which he/she can practice throwing with. If there are, for example, more students, and few balls they should be made to practice throwing in groups.
  • Students can practice throwing in pairs with one or sometimes with more balls. They can stand in two lines in front of each other. The distance between the lines depends on how experienced our students are. It is the teacher’s/ trainer’s task to decide which group can have the ball first and start throwing. The exercise can be started for a clap or a whistle.
  • Throwing exercises with staffed balls students are allowed not to catch the ball.
  • Naturally students’ attention must be raised to what kind of accidents might happen if they are not careful.
  • Handing balls out and collecting them must be done the way it has been detailed in chapter that describes free exercises.
