VIII.9. Other rules

The flood zone of the Tisza river is a Natura 2000 protected area; in addition several sections of the riverbank are specially protected areas. This is why it is of great significance that there are strict rules to be kept in these areas.

These rules include the ban on lighting fires, collecting firewood, cutting down trees, polluting the environment, breaching of the peace, etc. In specially protected areas it is not allowed to anchor the boat. Not obeying these rules is considered legal offence, but in some cases it can be a crime. (cutting down trees for example).

When putting together an itinerary it is important to contact the park rangers of the competent National Park and gather information from them concerning the (riverside) area in question.

When touring angling can be part of the program. This is why it is important to have the necessary permits and also the fishing and angling rules need to be kept.

Water traffic rules are to be found on the internet. They are obligatory to keep and not knowing them does not make anybody exempt fom the consequences. In order to be safe the following rules are the most important ones:

Five rules to be kept at all times:

  1. The red-white-red striped board floating on the water means: No entry!
  2. The red or green/black buoy floating on water or placed on the bank mark the left and the right side of the waterway. Watertouring people when going downstream are not allowed to stay permanently in the waterway. They can only cross it as it was described in point 4.
  3. When giving out sound signals on short signal means turning to the right; two short signals mean turning to the left; three short signals going backwards and one long signal: attention, please. Many short signals mean: Go out of my way!
  4. Ships can be approached at 30 m sideways and 60 m from the back . It is not allowed to cross the route of the regular ships at  1.000 m and hydroplanes at 1.500 m.
  5. The boat has to have one rope of at least 5-m length, a life jacket for each traveller (those who are under 16 and ho cannot swim have to wear it all the time) and one 1-l vessel or sponge and one white-light lamp.

In addition to knowing the above detailed rules all teachers, trainers and boating personnel have to be familiar with the water traffic signs. In order to avoid accidents these signs need to be interpreted in a detailed form.
