VI.1.5. The main features of organizing camps

The main tasks of organizing camps include the following:

  • Preparatory tasks: the elaboration of plans, ideas and the compilation of a detailed program.
  • Arrival and putting up the tents. (If it is necessary). Getting acquainted with the area.
  • It is important to ’map’ the area earlier.
  • Preparatory organizations, list of necessary tools and equipment. Budgeting.
  • Acquisition of necessary permissions, signing the contracts.
  • Marketing activites. Popularizing the camp on websites, in the printed press and in the social media.
  • Communicating the main and subsidiary tasks and allocating them to the organizing team, while considering team members’ personal competences.

The arrangement of the tents is ideal, if they can be clearly seen. The area should be ’closed’ to strangers.

It is also important to have a common area for meetings, programs and eating. This is the place where the information can be given to participants on the program, the rules and other issues of great importance.

The camp leader should be accomodated in the centre of the camp. It is important to have a good arrangement of all tents.

  • The actual realization of the program.
  • Camp closure and evaluation.
  • Cleaning, giving the camp site back to its operator, restoring the place to its original function and the evaluation of the work done by camp staff.

After-camp activities:

  • Cleaning the equipment
  • Picking up the garbage and having them taken away.
  • Cleaning the fireplace. Collecting the branches, spits, stools, packaging the equipment, cleaning the tents.
  • Burying the ditch, the place of the toilet and the compost. Observing the area.
  • Departure.  The camp leader is the last person to leave.
