VI.1.5.1. Choosing a campsite
- Features of the environment, its beauty, nearby sights.
- The state and condition of its facilities, the equipment available.
- The capacity of the campsite
- The preconditions of camping: health status, physical conditions, age group, preliminary training
- Providing meals and its costs. Opportunities to relax or have a rest. If there is a nearby night club for example, campers have no opportunity to have restful nights. The time factor. Possibilities to realize the programs. What programs can be done at the given site.
- The level of infrastucture. The availability of a medical office, police station and of the offices of the local government.
- The owner’s (operator’s) rules and possible other regulations.
- If the camp site is located in a swimming pool area, or in a forest, special permissions are needed from the competent authorities. When using mass transportation, the number of campers needs to be registered with the company.
It is advisable to prepare the following items. (one per tent, or distributed among the campers.) tools to repair tents, sewing kit, strings, glue, kitchen tools etc.
Equipment for the whole camp/group: first aid kit, kitchen tolls, game- and sport equipment, specialist books, wires, pliers, cooker, matches, lighter etc.
- Individual equipment: suitable clothing, hiking boots, spare boots, hiking trousers, raincoat, hat, swimsuit, health care products, first aid kit, medicines, rucksack, sleeping bag, matress. Cup, water bottle, plate, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, torch, batteries, writing paper, pen, documents, other useful items, pocket money. .
- Equipment for the hike master: maps, guide books, compass, timetables, hiking trip plans, permisssions etc..
It is important to eat well, to consume healthy food. Special attention needs to be paid to the quantity and quality of nutrients. Avoid indigestion and heavy food. It is important to have the right proportion of energy intake and consumption and the right proportion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Special attention needs to be paid to the storage of food. Do not buy and/or eat any food with faulty packaging and avoid sugary, sweet drinks, food, spices and alcohol.
