V.2. Recommendation of ski equipment

When, as a ski instructor I am asked what ski equipment to buy I usually say that it is not an easy matter. Several circumstances play a role when choosing ski equipment. Ski equipment can be purchased, rented or borrowed from friends or relatives.

The points to consider are as follows:

  • Skiing skills;
  • How many times the person has tried skiing;
  • The learning was assisted by an instructor or if it was autonomus learning
  • Body volume;
  • Age;
  • Skiing activity: from where to where the person intends to go;
  • The person’s aim;
  • Quality and difficulty of ski grounds;
  • Would it be a regular activity or, is it just one occasion to try it out.

Points to consider when choosing skis:

  • Basic requirement is the creation of an ideal contact between skier and ski slope.
  • Material, durability and flexibility.
  • The length of the skis in proportion to the person’s height.
  • The radius and width of skis.
  • The style of skis in relation to the ski slope.
  • Are the skis for a beginner, a more advanced or a professional learner?

Points to consider when choosing ski poles:

  • They help keep the balance, give rhythm and increase stability in standing position.
  • The material of the ski ploe determines its price. Although, it is importsant to note that expensice ski poles do not make us a better skier.
  • To choose the right size we need to turn it upside down. If we get hold of the part under its basket and our arm is squarely by the body, then it is the right size for us.
  • If we buy second-hand pole, it is important to check its basket and grip equipped with a strap.
