VII.13. Lipoprotein a (Lpa)

The physiological role of Lpa is unclear. It is synthesized in the liver; normal range is 0-300 mg/dl. The structure of Lpa is similar to that of LDL. It is an atherogenic marker, because it increases the production of foam cells and coagulation.

Its level is decreased by sexual steroids, GH and thyroid hormones. At present, its level cannot be influenced by medication.
