III.2.B.d. Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4)

It is synthesized in the liver and the adipose tissue.

Main effects: It increases insulin resistance.

It inhibits the insulin sensitivity of the skeletal muscle and

the function of the vascular endothelium.              

Its level is high in obese subjects and T2DM patients.

Treatment with a retinoid Fenretinide analog (a drug used against breast cancer) enhances RBP4 release in the kidneys, and abolishes insulin resistance in the mouse.
