III.3.B.g. Somatostatin

This is released from the nervous system, the stomach and intestines and the pancreatic D cells.

Its main effects on the metabolic mechanisms: it inhibits the secretion of insulin and glucagon, so it is important in the synchronization of the release of these hormones.   It preserves the body from the sudden release of a high amount of hormones into the blood.

The overexpression of Somatostatin may cause DM.
