III.3.B.b. Regulation of insulin release:

Stimulants of insulin secretion:

  • An increase of the blood Glu level (hyperglycemia)
  • Hormones released during eating, called incretins (gastric inhibitory polypeptide - GIP, CCK and GLP-1)
  • The incretins regulate insulin synthesis in the pancreas, which ensures sufficient insulin for Glu, the catabolic end-product.
  • Increase of the blood levels of some amino acids (Arg, Leu and Lys).
  • Stimuli of nervus vagus (cholinergic neurons).
  • Sulfonylurea derivatives.
  • Ach (the mechanism of action is not known).

Inhibitors of insulin secretion:

  • Stress.
  • Somatostatin
  • N and E (through the α1 receptors)
