III.2.B.i. Plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1)

Its main effects:   It stimulates the formation of blood clots (prothrombotic effect).

It inhibits fibrinolysis, thereby promoting coagulation.

It plays a role in the development of vascular diseases.

It is stimulated by FFA, insulin, TG and TNF-α.

It is inhibited by a loss in weight and by treatment with metformin or TZD.

An increase in its level correlates well with the degree of obesity, the elevated levels of insulin and TG, and insulin resistance.
