Submersion
During submersion a child will learn to:
- move safely
- orientate
- deliberately hold back and then exhale the air,
- keep his/her eyes open.
Exercises to teach submersion are as follows:
- Walking or running in water up to their knee or waist. Children can do this exercise on their own, in pairs, or, instructors can organize a relay race.
- From standing position going down to crouching (water at chin level).
- Bouncing with arms on hips.
- ’washing’ in water
- „hairwashing” with water running down the face.
- „It’s raining”. Each child throws water up and then stands below the drops.
- Bending trunk, letting arms down and boxing in water.
- ’Walking’ like seals in knee-high water.
- Learners stand in circle, hold their hands, and after bouncing once or twice, submerge in water, then stand up.
- The same as the former exercise, performed with open eyes.
- Throw a pebble or a coin into the water and the children find it and get it.
- In pairs one of the children stands in straddle position and the other one slips through his legs.
- Who can walk the longest distance while crouching in water?
