CLIL definitions and terms

CLIL is an acronym for Content-Language Integrated Learning. It describes an old-new approach to language teaching and learning, meaning that language use is integrated into the teaching of ’content’, i.e. the teaching of other (non-language) disciplines including maths, science, history, literature, sports, arts and many more. Thus in CLIL schools several disciplines are taught to learners through a foreign language, which is most often English. Teaching can be done by the language teacher using cross-curricular content or the subject teacher using the foreign language as the language of instruction. Both methods result in the simultaneous learning of content and English, consequently, CLIL has a dual focus.

In different educational contexts there are several terms and acronyms used to describe the integrated learning of a foreign language and a non-language subject.  Some of these are as follow:

  • Bilingual Integration of Languages and Disciplines (BILD)
  • Content-based Instruction (CBI)
  • Content-based Language Instruction (CBLI)
  • Content-based Language Teaching (CBLT)
  • English Across the Curriculum (EAC)
  • English as an Academic Language (EAL)
  • English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI)
  • Foreign Language Immersion Program (FLIP)
  • Foreign Languages as a Medium of Education (FLAME)
  • Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC)[1]

In summary, it can be stated that in CLIL learners are using the language to learn and at the same time they are learning to use the language.
