Learning It by Doing: Project-based Learning
I. 4. Activities
Activities
1. Observe a traditionally structured school lesson and a PBL-type lesson. Make a list of the teacher’s instructions.
2. After lesson observations in groups of four compare your lists and compare the two teaching methods.
Sample instructions:
Teacher’s instructions in a traditional classroom (with frontal work) |
Teacher’s instructions in a PBL-type classroom |
Be quiet. Listen. | Be interested in your work. |
Listen to me and follow what I am doing. Listen to the teacher. |
First try to do the task on your own. If you cannot do it, turn to your groupmates and ask for help. |
Don’t break the rules. Don’t leave your place without permission. | Try to find the solution yourself. |
Raise your hand if you want to say something. | Seek answers, investigate the problems. |
Don’t disturb the others with your questions. | Share your opinion with the others. |
Don’t talk, unless you are allowed to. | Observe your groupmates how they are working. |
Don’t help your neighbour. | Choose the task/exercise that interests you the most. Enjoy your work. |
Don’t ask for help. If you have a problem, tell me (the teacher). | Help those who are behind with their work. |
Try to be the first to finish your work. | Accept others’ help. |
When you have finished work, sit straight and be quiet. | Encourage others and help them if they are in need. |
Correct your mistakes. | Do everything you can for the success of group work. |
3. Discuss which method is better for personality development. Give your reasons, too.
