III.1.2. What is aerobics?

Aerobics is a form of exercise performed to music and consisting of basic gymnastic elements and rhythmical dance-like exercises. The word comes from the expression „aerob” (’with oxygen’). This activity improves endurance which means that the amount of oxygen is sufficient for oxygen-related energy-generating processes.

In fact, aerobics means two things. First: it refers to a performance-oriented competitive sport for the stage. Second: it refers to a sort of exercise used in fitness and recreation that can be done by people of all ages to keep healthy and improve general physical fitness. A significant difference is that while the competitive sport requires intensive effort for a shorter period of time, the recreational version means less intensive but extended workout.
