I.1. BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Beach volleyball is one of the most dynamically developing sports. It is an ideal game to be played on specially built, sandy courts. As a team game, beach volleyball is a great recreational choice for friends or spontaneous groups. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it is easy to acquire, and, once the rules are learnt, the game can be played freely.

Its story started on the beaches of Santa Monica, USA in the 1920s. In the sixties, Marilyn Monroe and J. F. Kennedy were also among the keen visitors of the matches, and the popularity of the sport still keeps growing.

In the beginning, it was played by teams of 6 members, but later, due to the rapid development of the sport, teams consisted of only 3 or 4 members.

The pair game called “beach volley” is not a version of volleyball developed further, but a pure form of the game that requires the players to know a whole repertoire of movements on a large sandy court.

One of the most popular sports in the world, beach volleyball had its debut as a fully acknowledged discipline at the Atlanta Summer Olympic Games, in 1996. Nowadays, the beaches of Santa Monica, California and Copacabana of Rio de Janeiro are among the best known worldwide. One of the greatest players of beach volleyball is Karch Kiraly, the American player of Hungarian origin.
